Design of the Convocation Attire for AIIMS Mangalagiri

Design of the Convocation Attire for AIIMS Mangalagiri
The convocation attire for AIIMS Mangalagiri was conceptualized as part of the Need-Based Transformation of Fibre to Product course by the Textile and Apparel Design (TAD) students of the 2021 Batch at NID Andhra Pradesh. This project aimed to create an attire that reflects the dignity, identity, and ethos of AIIMS while embracing sustainability and Indian textile heritage.
Concept & Development
- The core design concept was developed within a span of three weeks through extensive research and exploration.
- The final compilation and documentation were undertaken by faculty members of NID AP to ensure a structured and well-researched outcome.
Design Philosophy
The attire embodies a harmonious blend of tradition, professionalism, and modern aesthetics, drawing inspiration from:
- Indian Handloom Textiles – Showcasing cultural richness and sustainability.
- Medical Profession Symbolism – Reflecting purity, dedication, and excellence.
- Minimalist and Elegant Design – Prioritizing comfort while maintaining a formal appeal.
Material & Color Palette
- Fabric: Sustainable khadi or a handwoven cotton-silk blend.
- Base Color: Ivory or off-white, symbolizing knowledge, integrity, and service.
- Accent Colors: Deep blue and maroon, representing AIIMS’ identity and the medical profession.
- Embellishments: Gold or silver thread highlights, signifying achievement and honor.
Key Design Features
- Stole (Uttariya): Inspired by the traditional angavastram, adorned with the AIIMS insignia.
- Minimalist Open-Front Gown: A lightweight and breathable garment, ensuring a dignified yet comfortable experience.
- Sleeve Detailing: Subtle regional textile motifs, celebrating Andhra Pradesh’s handloom heritage.
- Headgear: A simple stole drape or a turban-style alternative instead of a Western mortarboard, preserving Indian academic tradition.
Sustainability & Craftsmanship
The project embraces eco-conscious design, using biodegradable textiles and supporting local artisans. The attire highlights handwoven fabrics, reinforcing the importance of India’s textile legacy while ensuring a sustainable and ethical production process.
A Symbol of Excellence and Tradition
The AIIMS Mangalagiri convocation attire is more than just ceremonial wear—it is a statement of identity, excellence, and sustainability. By integrating Indian textile heritage with modern academic aesthetics, this attire ensures a dignified and memorable convocation experience.
